Computer-Delivered IELTS vs. Paper-Based IELTS: Which Test Should I Take?

IELTS

Language proficiency is critical for anyone aiming to study, work, or immigrate to English-speaking countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, or the USA. These countries often require demonstrating a specific English level through standardized tests like the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The IELTS is widely accepted by thousands of employers, professional associations, governments, and educational institutions because it provides a comprehensive evaluation of one's English proficiency. With this standardized test available in both paper-based and computer-delivered formats, you may be wondering which option best aligns with your preference and convenience to help you achieve the scores that you need.

Choosing the right format can contribute to a smoother test experience and, ultimately, your success — that is why Atheneum is here to help!

Differences Between the Two Formats

Both paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS assess your English language skills across four subtests: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. While they share the same content, difficulty, scoring, and cost, the key distinctions between the two lie in your test experience, schedule availability, and turnaround time. In the paper-based format, you will complete the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections using the provided test booklets, answer sheets, and a pencil. While you are allowed to scribble and write on the booklets, ensure that your answers are recorded on the answer sheet at the end of each test. On the other hand, computer-delivered IELTS requires you to answer the three sections by directly typing into the computer software. Since no scratch paper is provided, you can utilize the 'Highlight' and 'Notes' features of the software for references or any annotations.

Listening

The Listening test consists of 40 items divided into four parts. This will take approximately 30 minutes, with additional time provided at the end of the test.

In the paper-based IELTS Listening test, the availability of headphones depends on the specific test venue's setup, so it is best to check with the test center whether the recording will be played via headphones or speakers. As the test requires you to listen to the audio, read the questions, and write your answers simultaneously, you are allowed to quickly jot down notes and temporarily record your answers on the test booklet. At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your responses to the answer sheet.

For the computer-delivered IELTS Listening test, headphones are provided to ensure a focused audio experience as you listen and type simultaneously.  Since you will directly input your answers on the computer, there is no need for a transfer time, but you will have a dedicated 2-minute period at the end of the Listening section to review your answers.

Reading The Reading test consists of 40 items, and the number and topic of the passages depend on whether you are taking IELTS Academic or General Training. You must complete the test within one hour, as no additional time is provided. In the paper-based test, you will need to turn the pages of your test booklet back and forth to navigate between your reading material and test items.

Meanwhile, the computer-delivered test presents the reading passages on the left side of the screen, with the test items on the right. This setup provides a less distracting reading experience and a more focused approach to answering.

Writing

The Writing test is composed of two tasks: a report or a letter, and an essay.

In the paper-based format, you must handwrite your responses, limiting your ability to make quick revisions. This also requires you to spend time manually checking if you have reached the required word count for the task.

On the other hand, the Writing section in computer-delivered IELTS allows you to type your responses directly into the text box. With the freedom to type from any part of the text, and the functionality of copy, cut, and paste within the software, you can easily edit your written content. Additionally, the word count is automatically displayed on the screen.

Speaking

The speaking test takes 11 to 14 minutes and follows the same three-part structure for both formats. You will have a face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner at the test center. If the interview is conducted via video call, it will still take place at the test center, with an interlocutor present to guide you.

Test Availability

The paper-based format is more widely available in terms of location. However, it is offered on fewer test dates, and this limited availability may potentially lead to scheduling conflicts for some test-takers.

In contrast, the computer-delivered IELTS is available in select test venues only, but where offered, it provides more flexibility with more test dates and times to choose from, making it easier for you to find a convenient schedule.

Test Result Form

The Test Result Form is released at least 13 calendar days for paper-based IELTS, but within 3-5 days for computer-delivered IELTS.

You will need to contact your IELTS provider to confirm whether your Test Result Form will be mailed via courier or will be available for download through your IELTS account.

Factors to Consider in Choosing Which You Should Take

The choice between the paper-based and computer-delivered versions of the IELTS exam can depend on factors such as personal preferences, location, schedule, and the release of test results.

Some test-takers may appreciate the familiarity of pencil and paper, and may find the paper-based format be less intimidating. If you prefer the tactile experience of using a pencil, the paper-based format might be right for you.

On the other hand, tech-savvy individuals might find the computer-delivered format more in line with their daily activities. If you are comfortable using computers to navigate the digital test interface and type your answers simultaneously, the computer-delivered IELTS may suit you better.

If the format is not a deciding factor, but the schedule is crucial, note that the paper-based IELTS is offered on limited test dates, and results take 13 calendar days. In contrast, the computer-delivered IELTS has more available test dates depending on the location, and results are released within 3-5 calendar days. You can choose a test available on a date that aligns with your timetable and at a location near you.

With these key differences, know that both paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS assess your English language skills across exactly the same four subtests: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
